Unhappy Map Installation and Mapsource Problem

Vietnam map Installation and Mapsource problem. (2 problems)

I am an inexperienced user (I guess) I am running XP Home Edition. I wanted to install the map Laos Vietnam Cambodia 2010 R6 to open and view in Mapsource. (I have Mapsouce already on my computer and have used it extensively as a surveying tool)

Asiagps kindly sent me this file Laos Vietnam Cambodia 2010 R6.7z which I unzipped to produce this file Laos Vietnam Cambodia 2010 R6.exe

I ran this file and all appeared OK in that I saw the file was “unpacking” but then I got the message to type in an “Installation Password” I was not supplied with an installation password so I went to the forum and I see others had trouble here but I could not find the solution (password) I saw a note about the password will be found in the installation.txt file ?? but I did not find this ?? Please help here !!

OK so this failed but now when I try to open Mapsource, it will not open and I get a message “There is a problem with the Viet Nam Open 0.09 installation. Please reinstall etc etc” I cannot reinstall as I have no password. I want Mapsource back so is the only alternative to uninstall Mapsource and reinstall ??

I have just sent you a private message regarding the password -> please check.

What wonders me is you "Viet Nam Open 0.09" message. This is non of our maps.
Mapsource crashed because you have installed another Vietnam map with the same FID/PID number as our map so Mapsource doesn't know which map to load.
Apparently the mapper of your other Vietnam map did not follow the mapping rules and didn't check the availability of FID/PID numbers prior to compiling and distribution of his map.
    Otherwise this should not happen!

In order to get your Mapsource back on track I would advise you to fully de-install the other map. Honesly I am really worried if the other map will uninstall completely using the standard Windows deinstallation procedure. If any traces of that map remain in the registry Mapsource will keep on crashing again and again. I would recommend to use the free version of the Revo uninstaller to make sure the de-installation of the other map is a complete one.

You may also check the registry entries -> regedit -> HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE -> SOFTWARE -> Garmin -> Mapsource -> Families and remove any entry related to your other Vietnam map.
Once removed, restart your computer and your Mapsource should be working fine again.

    Hope that helps
    Best wishes

Answered many times...... People just don't read, just download..... Even in the download area where you got the map from you will find the hint - Windown Vista + 7 users, right click on the installer file and run as administrator
    That should help

    Ahh..

Perhaps, if its such a common mistake, it should be added to the instructions that accompany the file ??

Doubly so as this hidden gen of knowledge isnt even visible unless you click the 'more' on the download file. If you just go and download it, how would we know this ??

Thanks anyway I will give it a go now.

This issue has nothing to do with our map but is related to the security settings of your operating system. We cannot know which security settings each user applies within his operating system. Hundreds of downloads where it works without the "run as admin" and also quite a few where it doesn't. Solely depending on users knowledge.

The common mistake is that people don't read.

Dont read the hidden on one place drill down info you mean ?? If its so common.. Surely putting it in the instructions would have solved that ?? Isnt that what instructions are for ??

Your blaming people for not reading. But reading where ?? Its not in the README !!

Go click downloads.. See the link to the file ?? And now see this 'instruction' ?? No.. Because its hidden unless you click 'more'. So if you go and download this as a normal person would, you dont see this hidden instruction. Blaming users foor doing the obvious, when the solution is so simple, is making a problem that doesnt need to exist.

You cant expect people to have read every thread or to search out ever possible drill down. If its a common error, as you say.. then put it in the file.
