I would appreciate a Mongolia map for my NUVI

    Hi

I am about to make up my mind whether to join a 4X4 expedition to Siberia and Mongolia middle of this year. We will ship our cars to Dalian, China and then drive to Siberia, Mongolia and back through China, Laos and Thailand in 47 days.

I have been trying to download Lurkin's map of Mongolia from here for quite a while now but had never been able to do so. Each time I try a download, it says I have exceeded my limit although Lurkin has checked and said I have actually downloaded... .

If I do join the trip, I am sure the tracks I will be collecting will help greatly in enhancing the existing map, but I would really like to see what is already inside the map first......

    Cflai,

Wao, that is very intresting. Both of us are driving same car but, mine have never been to ourside of the country and you are going to Sybelia!! Amazing. It must be a great adventure! Don't forget the snow tires. 275 size snow tire will be very difficult to find if you miss a season.

    best regards,

    Ryo

    Hello cflai9353,

Wow - that's a great trip ahead :) Dear me....
If you guys really decide to go make sure you carry all spare parts for your cars with you. Road quality in Mongolia besides of the very few roads can be compared with the Dakar rally. At least 2 spare tyres is a must. Also advisable is to make sure all rubber parts in car's suspension/undercarriage are in good conditions though you will have to replace them after the trip for sure.

Make sure you guys have a satellite phone so you could call for rescue in case of emergency.

I shall see how I get the Mongolia map to you :) But don't expect too much, it includes only some main roads. The rest is desert anyway.
    Good luck

Btw since I am on a fast internet connection (8 Mbps) all my previous download problems are solved :)

Thanks for the tips. I am not sure but I think we will not need snow tyres as it will be May/Jun (Summer) when the convoy gets there.... . Pictures of Siberian scenes are beautiful!

Can you get your car shipped out of Japan into China?? Maybe you can join us!! I don't know the costs so far as the organizers have not announced it yet. I know, time is the main stumbling block and that is the main reason I cannot decide to join or not yet!

    Bro Lurkin

Thanks for sending the map through e-mail. I have opened it to have a brief look. Yes, it shows a quite a bit - even has some POIs in Ulaan Baator! OK for a start unless I can find another better one.....

Thanks also for the tips re preparations for the car. If the trip materializes, I am told we will have a lead car of Russian guides leading the way (The very same people who took some of our group members through Moscow to China when they went on the last trip from London to Malaysia) so I guess we will be quite safe...

Have a brief glimpses of utube videos taken of Mongolian roads on the internet, not so nice eh?? Hahaha! But that's what the trip is all about I guess!

As for the map - you need to zoom in to 1.2 kms (at least) to see roads as I didn't bother to waste time on level adjustments in the first initial release.

I do not know if you guys will need a Russian guide (Russian is commonly spoken language in Mongolia).
Nevertheless excellent vehicle conditions are necessary - coolant, coolant hoses, ribbed belts (for cooling system), tire conditions + spare tires coz if something brakes down there will simply be no help for hundreds of miles.
Search for Mongolian Star Melchers which is the authorized Mercedes Benz dealer in Mongolia. They got a Russian guy who can repair almost everything.
Visit them in Ulanbator and get their phone number. They have also been organizing rallies in Mongolia so I guess its your best bet to get their advice.

    Hi Cflai,

Thank you for the offer. Yeah I can ship my car to there but, You are right, the issue is the time. I can not take such a long vacation for the voyage. Poor me. May be some day, after my retirement, I will try.

Currently not since there was no feedback so far from those who download the map. We rely on tracklog and POI contributions by map users to improve the maps.
