    HCMC tracklog

I uploaded a tracklog of a little tour around HCMC I made on my motorbike. It a bit of an experiment, trying to figure out how all of this works. Is it of any use? Format, accuracy etc?

    Hi Tj,

Thanks for posting the tracklog. Any tracklog is useful. The one you posted is a great because you didn't set "lock on the road". That means GPS receiver records position without ajusting the position to the line one the map. One thing I don't know why it happened is POIs in the GDB file. There were so many POIs along with your tracklog.

Probably the best way to pass us your tracklog is a "gpx" format. gpx format is a kind of defacto standard format among various software. GDB is garmin only format. So, what I do is open GDB file and "save as a gpx format" before working on the data. It is nice when you can do it at your side. As matter of fact, it may be depends on the GPS receiver you have but, my GPS60CSx or E-Trex Vista HCX records track log in gpx format on the SD card.

    best regards,

    Ryo

Ok, zipping the tracklog makes a massive difference in size.

So I made another tracklog where I drove around the military base and through all the back alleys as far as I could get. This gives a pretty good picture about where the no-go zones are. The base is located in the middle of the "circle" I drove. A bit further down south is another tracklog where I went to the pub. This was supposed to be a seperate one but somehow my gps stiched it together.

Down below is a list of the base-entrance waypoints in local Vietnamese time. This can be used to find the actual coordinates in the tracklog. I cannot make a waypoint in my gps so this is the only way to do it. I took the times off my watch but before I went, I synchronized it with a internet gps clock first. Just subtract 7 hours to get UTC:

    Base entrances:
    17:41:38
    17:49:08
    18:09:40
    18:13:23
    18:21:09
    18:30:31
    18:43:20

    Some other POI's:
    18:35:44 = Big C Supermarket
    19:05:50 = Phatty's sports bar
    Hello Tj,

Sure, its a big difference when you zip the files. I was just wondering, a 7.95 MB sized tracklog must be like one month of recording.
But I assume that happens when you convert from KML into GPX.

Just be careful when driving around military compounds. Things can turn sour easily once the boys notice you do some recordings.
    Best wishes
