Mandatory firmware update for Garmin Nuvi 1100/1200/1300/1400 series

As a Nuvi 1490T owner I received the following email:

Today, Garmin released a free, mandatory GPS software update to correct some software issues that cause select GPS devices to repeatedly power on and freeze at the Garmin logo. The product models affected are models in the nüvi 1100 series, nüvi 1200 series, nüvi 1300 series, and nüvi 1400 series. Not all individual devices in these series of models may experience this freezing condition.

You can download a free firmware update immediately that will prevent these software issues by using Garmin's WebUpdater program. This update will prevent the freezing problem caused by these software bugs but it will not correct the problem if your device has already experienced this problem.

If your device has already experienced problems, you will need to return your device to Garmin for repair. Please allow 10-14 days for the repair and return of your device.

We know our customers rely upon their Garmin GPS device(s), especially during the summer travel season, and we regret any inconvenience this situation may have caused. We are committed to developing products that are known for their quality and reliability and will continue to work diligently to earn the trust of our customers.

    Updated my unit, worked flawlessly.

Members with THAI OS installed on Thai-purchased Nuvi's better check with your authorized dealer prior to updating.
Don't PM (private message) me for help. Ask your questions using the appropriate forum I will try to help asap. Other members might face similar issues.

    Hi Lurkin

I have a NUVI 1460 Malaysia/Singapore version, the last update from Garmin was version 2.60 in July.

The machine still have 2 major flaws that I know of:

    1. Garmin claimed the NUVI 1460 has 10,000 track points (Blue line on screen), from day 1 of their release up till today, the machine can only show 500 points. They say you can still download all 10,000 points into your computer. But the point is, I want to see all 10,000 points on the screen to be able to retrace my tracks, with only 500, I will loose my tracks after a very short distance...

    2. With the ver 2.60 firmware update, try "WHERE TO", then "Points of Interest", then "Spell Name", type in name and once found, Press on "GO", the whole machine will then "hang" for quite a long while.... i.e. it will take a long time for the route to appear. (Faster to switch off the machine and on again, go to "recently found" and tap on your newly found destination to activate the route.....)

    3. My Australian and British voices will pause from time to time when announcing even after updating them....

All the above do not happen on the other NUVI 760 and 265WT units I have.......

Hmmm, sounds strange. Coz of firmware version 2.60? My Nuvi 1490 runs on version 4.40.

Did you use Garmin's Web Updater to update your firmware?

I have no clue if the Malaysian version is any different from US or European version but I assume not since you are having the same characters. Worst case scenario would be to re-upload your local maps.
I would re-try to update via the Web Updater function again. You might also want to consult your local general distributor to clarify on that.
Did you read "If your device has already experienced problems, you will need to return your device to Garmin for repair." this sentence?

I am not facing any problems with the 1490; took it for a ride up to the north and back to Bangkok. No problems recording all the way; tracklogs are just as perfect as with GPSMAP 60CSx.

    Good luck
