    Garmin GPS

    Hi Folks,

Wanted to know if anyone here, has any experience or tips to share about Garmin GPS units mainly 1460 / 1490t model. I just got my second unit of 1460, after the first unit was stolen. Am trying to explore more about how to go about updating maps and sharing info.. or POI's.

Hi and welcome to the forum,

Depends on where you bought your new 1460. In some countries you will get a free one shot map update from Garmin for the maps pre-installed on your unit.

If you bought your unit in Malaysia you can get map updates either from your local dealer or from malsingmaps.com.
For - let me call it "grey market" - units you need to register on Garmin's website first [Dear Guest/Member you can't see link before replyclick here to register] and see what map updates are available for your unit.

Since you already downloaded our Cambodia-Laos-Vietnam map, any questions regarding the installation have already been answered in the newbie section of this forum.

Own recorded tracklogs and POI's can be submitted to the regional map feedback forum and the mappers will implement those in the upcoming map release.

Hope that helps in the first shot.

    Hi lurkin,

Thanks for the info. Bought my unit in Malaysia, and it already been loaded with MalSing map, Thailand and Vietnam. But when i browse through the Vietnam map, there isn't much details per say, just roads without names, and no other POIs.

In order to uninstall the Vietnam map, do i just untick it ? or delete the file from the Garmin map folder?

    Thanks

In order to receive a correct answer you need to provide a bit more details.

If your current maps - Malaysia/Singapore/Thailand/Vietnam - are located in the internal memory of your Nuvi I would not delete anything. Let's say you decided to sell your unit for what ever reasons, it would be an advantage to have the original configuration.

If your maps are located on a microSD card the question is, are the maps a single IMG-file or multiple files? Some of the later Garmin units (I reckon the 1460 does as well) allow to use additional maps with own file names installed. Hence there would be a directory called "maps" which could contain:
    • Malaysia.img
    • Thailand.img
    • Vietnam.img
Any map name would be allowed as long as the file ends with "img".

In such a case you could upload the Vietnam map you downloaded here into your "maps" directory and call it i.e. asiaGPSVietnam.img

Than just untick your pre-loaded Vietnam map and tick the asiaGPSVietnam.img to activate the map.

    Hope that helps.
