    Various tracklogs collected in Timor

Attached are a few tracklogs that I've collected while driving in Timor-Leste.

It's probably not all 100% useful, but maybe a good starting point?

I use the GPS mainly for hiking and not so much for driving, but if there now a good point to it, I'm happy to collect some more track logs.

    Just let me know.

    Thanks for that, much appreciated.

Had a brief look at one of the tracks; to my surprise it show a motorbike track in the ocean?

[Dear Guest/Member you can't see link before replyclick here to register]

But ok, this is taken in Mapsource with Garmin's world map in the background.
Btw. this specific tracklog contains also 141 POI's, most of them just numbered?
Is there any legend for those numbers?

    Amendment

Have now loaded our first version of the Timor Leste into Mapsource and imported the same tracklog as above. Now the picture is totally different

So no more motorbike in the ocean
Still the questions of those numbered POI's remains.
I also have noticed that your GPS's unit recording interval is probably set to most often.
Thats OK out of town, but it would be better to have 1 second tracklogs with log on to street turned off.

    Thanks

That's the best I have at the moment

    Hi Lurkin,

The tracks have been collected by me and a friend of mine. We'll continue to record some more tracks and see if we can track with a better resolution. My regular GPS is an Gecko 201, so that one doesn't have too many options to set. I guess something is better then nothing. My friend has a eTrex Venture HC so that one should have a bit more options.

For the waypoints: If e.g. GoogleEarth doesn't show a road there, it's probably the waypoints we set up for a hike. The data I send you was quite 'raw' as I wanted to check with you if this is what you're looking for. So, in this case you can probably just delete them.

For the new to record tracks: Are you more interested in the (small) streets of Dili or more in the main roads? Just to know when to put the GPS on and to know if there is any point taking a different road to e.g. lunch/home etc so you get more streets in Dili (where I live and work). I really like to help, but need a little bit more info what will help giving you the right data.

Thank you for your reply. Generally speaking any track logs, no matter if main roads or small streets are most welcome in order to improve the map.

The main issue is the map accuracy, so the bigger or longer the recording interval, the less accurate the track. Best case would be a 1 second track log recording interval, but if not possible "most often" will also do. I have no clue about the Gecko unit - is it possible to set "lock to road" to OFF? If yes, this should definitely be done.

Would also be good if you had Garmin's mapsource where you could actually import your own tracklogs and POI's and name and categorize those properly.
Please read here [Dear Guest/Member you can't see link before replyclick here to register] how to get Mapsource for free if you don't have it.

I have created in the meantime an installer for the Timor Leste map so you would be able to view the current map in Mapsource. I will send you the installer separately. Please remember the map will not be routable in Mapsource.

Please feel free to ask if you need additional information since I do not know your experience level in terms of GPS.

    Thank you for your support

That installer needs a bit of work

    Hi Lurkin,

Thanks for the info. I'll record some more tracks and send them to you. I'll also search around for some earlier made files as there is plenty of room for additional files. Is there an easy way to share new waypoints etc without having to keep send gpx files?

Thanks for the installer. I did eventually get it into MapSource and got it working, so I can finally view the map you've compiled in Mapsource. Quite impressed with the amount of detail and the POIs that are already in there. A lot more then I would have expected to be honest.

But the installer you've sent me needs a bit of work. First of all, the installer didn't let me install the map on UNC (network share). But that's not a big issue. After installing, MapSource didn't seem to "see" the map.

Checking the directory, I noticed the "Timor Leste Garmin GPS map.img" file was only 5kb, which I presume was just a place holder and replaced it with your img file I've downloaded earlier, but that didn't make any change in MapSource.

When checking the directory where the files were installed, I noticed there was a .reg file. Checking the content was showing different directories then the default install directory. After changing the registry to match, I've imported the reg file and tried map source, but without any luck.

But as I use Win7 64bit, I figured that my registry setting are a bit different then from a 32bit system and this was indeed the case.

So, I need to change the part between [] to include "Wow6432Node\" like below:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Garmin\Map Source\Families\Timor Leste Garmin GPS map]

After re-importing the registry, I finally was able to open the map and see all the work you've done.

So a bit of "criticism" about the installer, but I hope you understand I mean well: I'm trying to give you clear feedback as much as possible so the next release will go smooth and can be installed by people that want/need to know regedit.

This weekend, we'll going to be driving south from Dili a bit, so we'll have a good chance to see how accurate the map is.

    We'll keep you posted.

You may upload your tracklogs here as an attachment or send them by email to [Dear Guest/Member you can't see link before replyclick here to register].

The small size IMG-file is the map overview for Mapsource; the other IMG-file is the actual map.

When checking the directory where the files were installed, I noticed there was a .reg file. Checking the content was showing different directories then the default install directory. After changing the registry to match, I've imported the reg file and tried map source, but without any luck.

Thanks for the useful hint, I haven't found yet an installer which could handle 32 and 64 bit at the same time. If you know any, please point me in the right direction.
Since most of the folks is on 32 bit XP, Vista or WIN 7 I didn't really pay much attention to that; but it shall be considered in the future.

So a bit of "criticism" about the installer, but I hope you understand I mean well: I'm trying to give you clear feedback as much as possible so the next release will go smooth and can be installed by people that want/need to know regedit.

Don't worry, I appreciate any positive and productive feedback and you actually provided the details what has to be changed.
    Thanks for that

    Hello GerardNL,

Following your recommendation, I have now modified the installer to work with Win7 64bit. I have attached the installer here for testing.
Kindly please check and let me know if this works for you.

    Thank you

    Track Sharing

    Hi Lurkin,
I'm in process to build Timor Leste map, I use mapedit in develop the map and so far I have no basis data at all except imagery from Google. I take this chance to ask your permitions in using the tracklog for calibrating the imagery for my reference.
I wish if we could work together for better free maps for others.

    Many thanks

Hello epik and welcome to the forum.
Hmmmm, don't you think its a bit much asking straight away for the source file (mp-file)?
Sounds a bit like a cheap trick to me :)
Do you have any tracklogs to contribute for the Timor Leste map?

    Thanks

As I mentioned before, I have no data at all 'cept google imagery. Therefore, I will try to work on it myself.
    Thanks
