Dear forum members,
In an earlier thread someone asked how to use the downloaded Thailand map. He got the advice to unzip the files with 7Zip. I did so myself, but am still unable to use it.
Message: this is not a Mapsource compatible file (or something like that).
I see no .gpx files even when I list the details.
Running 7Zip as administrator I tried as well without result. (In Windows 7 Starter)
How do I open the map in Mapsource?
Thinking it a bit further, I bought the Vietnam - Cambodia - Laos map on cd. Will I have the same problems here?

Hello Chuparuedas,
Welcome to the forum.
After you downloaded the zipped file and unzipped it using free 7-zip software you will see an installer file, Laos Vietnam Cambodia 2010R6.exe (you subscribed for the map on CD but downloaded it now).
Since you are on Windows 7, you need to run the installer file as "administrator". This is a Windows issue and has nothing to do with our maps.
Right mouse click -> run as administrator.
The map installs by default into c:\program files\your downloaded map.
Now, the map was installed and all necessary registory entries created in order Mapsource will recognize the map. Leave the files alone, you can't open them.....
Start your Mapsource instead and activate the map in the small little block directly below the menu on top. Mapsource shows by default either "no map" if this this is an older version, the later version will display in the block "world map" or "trip and waypoint manager". Once you select there the Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam map, the map becomes active and is being displayed in the right window.
Btw. a GPX file is a tracklog file, not a map file. What you probably mean is an IMG-file, which would be the compiled map in Garmin format (but can't be viewed on Mapsource).
That should help

Did you read the Mapsource manual which explains step by step how to upload maps onto your Garmin unit?
Refer to the attached screen shots taken from the Mapsource manual.
Make sure you mark all 8 tiles of the Cambodia/Laos/Vietnam map otherwise the map will not work.
And don't forget a generous donation

Hi Sudaphan,
Which file do you mean actually? In my downloads directory I get one file and one directory of the same name. In the directory there are two files. There is no exe file.

Hi Lurkin.
Thanks again.
The problem was: I could not discover an exe file. I will search again. I myself am not error-free of course.
Question: if you cannot see the map in Mapsource, can you see it on the device? Is it routable?
Regards,
Frank

Right now you can't see the map on your device. The IMG-files you reported earlier are tiles of the map. Mapsource puts those together with database and routing information and creates the one single IMG-file which becomes your routable map.
You have ordered the map on CD, I will post it to you today. It includes exactly the 1 single IMG-file with the routable map.

I am also having problems using the .IMG file on my Garmin. I have tried saving the Cambodia map (.IMG file) to the root directory of my SD card in my GPS but cannot find any detail when I zoom in to Cambodia.
I have installed Mapsource onto my PC, but not sure what to do with it. As you say, Mapsource won't open an .IMG file
Windows wants to use the file to either burn a disk image or open it with IrfanView, but is unable to do either as it tells me the file header is incorrect.
Any suggestions?

The IMG-file is a map file in Garmin's native map format. Besides of Garmin GPS units there are only very few application which are able of reading the IMG-file.
To use the IMG-map file on a microSD card inserted into your Garmin unit is pretty straight forward procedure.
You need to create a directory called "garmin" on the microSD card in the first step.
Next copy the IMG-file onto the microSD card into the directory Garmin and insert the card into the device.
Fire up your GPS and from the main screen navigate to "Tools" button located on the right bottom end of the display.
In the next menu which pops up automatically select "Settings" which takes you to the next menu.
Tap the "Map" symbol there and you will be taken to the Map menu where you can adjust the Map details (most) Map view (3-D), the vehicle and if the unit should display the trip log.
On the same page on the bottom you should see "info"; when you tap this the unit will display all available maps on your unit.
Make sure you tick the ack of the new map which you just copied onto your microSD card.
Much easier would be to upload the map via Mapsource. The following applies for map with Mapsource installer (i.e. our Cambodia-Laos-Vietnam map set) only.
The detailed description with supporting screen shots is here: You can see links before reply
Hope that helps

HI, still not having any sucess.
I have created a folder on my micro SD card called Garmin and coppied the file gmapprom.img into this folder. When I go into Settings/Map/Info in my GPS device, there appears to be only the Australia/New Zealand map installed. There is a check box with a tick in it beside the words CN Aus & NZ NT 2011.20 and no other maps listed.
I am also unable to find any detail when I zoom in on Cambodia in my GPS.
I would greatly appreciate any advice as to what I can do to solve this problem. I have Mapsource on my PC, so would try transfering the maps via Mapsource, however my understanding is that I would need the Cambodia maps in a different format to open them in Mapsource. Is this correct?
Any help is much appreciated.

I would like to suggest to download the Cambodia-Laos-Vietnam Mapsource installer from the download area here and install it using Mapsource.

Hi All,
This could maybe solve my identical problem. (Only Thailand visible, but not Cam-Laos-Viet.) I'll give it a try. Thanks Lurkin.
